Preferred Textiles for Compression Garments

Fabric selection is the singular most important consideration in compression garment construction. Fiber composition must provide support and elasticity, and must apply sufficient pressure to compress the body evenly and smoothly.

Powernet

Powernet is a flexible, two-way stretch synthetic fabric that is favored for its ability to return to its original shape after stretching (memory). It is manufactured in a variety of weights and weaves. This fabric is lightweight, breathable, and easy to care for. Hand wash or machine wash on delicate cycle and air dry.

Girdles, waist cinchers, compression vests, and body shapers are often constructed from powernet fabric.

Spandex

Spandex is a synthetic fiber, known for its exceptional elasticity. It is a popular choice for athletic compression wear. A popular name brand is "Lycra". It offers four-way stretch, is form-fitting, and whisks moisture away from the body. Spandex should be hand washed or machine washed on delicate cycle and air dried.

Compression garments made from Spandex include: surgical hose, support hose, unisuits, foundation garments and compression shorts.

Latex

Natural latex used in compression garments is extracted from the sap found in rubber trees. Garments containing latex can supplement waist reduction by causing the compressed area to sweat and burn excess fatty tissue.

Popular fat-burning compression garments include waist cinchers, vests and abdominal wraps.

Quality Considerations

A high-quality garment will be constructed so it can be worn for long periods of time without discomfort. Shaping materials, such as flexible boning, should be secured on an outside layer of the garment. For maximum comfort, fasteners and labels should should not come in contact with the skin.
